How to get rid of ear mites
Ear mite infestation can make a dog’s life extremely uncomfortable. Constant head shaking and scratching is a sign that the dog has these tiny parasites. Due to extreme itchiness, the dog will be seen rubbing the face against the carpet or ground. The discomfort is caused by the microscopic ear mites. These very small spider-like parasites thrive on the moist area of the ear canal and feed on ear wax and epidermal debris. These organisms will burrow into the skin causing extreme itching so that the incessant scratching of the infected dog will result to bleeding ears. The violent shaking would break small blood vessels causing the formation of hematomas. Infection that is characterized by coffee ground-like discharge and foul odor will set in.
Dogs are well loved pets thus a pet parent would naturally be concerned. The ear mites that infest the dog cannot affect humans but the infestation can be transmitted to other pets. A pet parent should not worry too much as there are ways to eradicate the infestation. An ear mite infestation can be easily controlled with OTC medication and home treatments. However, because the signs of ear mite infestation are similar to the symptoms of other health concern, a dog owner has to be sure that the dog has ear mites and that the discomfort and the foul smell is not caused by bacterial or fungal infection.
Over the counter medications for ear mite eradication can be used. This type of OTC medications have insecticides as its main component thus the ear mites will be killed but the incubating eggs will not be affected. These medications have to be used for 21 days following the life cycle of an ear mite to ensure that the parasite is totally eliminated.
Topical ear medications used for 10 to 14 days would be a better choice as these kinds of medications contains antibiotics for the inflammation and infection of the ears. A dog infested with ear mites would have painful ears thus applying topical medications can be a challenge as a pet in pain will not be cooperative. For pets that would not tolerate direct treatment, injections that can be given weekly or every two weeks would be a better alternative. Injectible medications though must be administered only by a vet as some dogs are sensitive to these medications.
A pet owner may opt to use mineral oil to remove the dog’s ear mites. This can be done by applying a generous amount of mineral oil and massaging the ear to smoother the parasites. The treatment must be repeated until the infestation is removed.
