Bedbugs survive on the blood of warm-blooded animals.  They are known as nocturnal insects since they tend to feed and usually come out of hiding at night-time.

While one is asleep, bedbugs extract blood in a very painless fashion. During their feeding time they inject their saliva into your skin. The saliva contains anticoagulants and anesthetics. Bed bugs feed for close to five minutes and then they are done. Those five minutes of feeding could keep the bed bugs filled up for a long period of time, so even if they do not have another immediate host, they can survive. Research has said that bed bugs bite in a linear pattern of three bites, so if you have three consecutive bites on your skin then chances are you have been bitten by a bedbug. Bites from bed bugs are usually red in appearance and are either flat or raised bumps. A bite from a bedbug can show up immediately, while some bites might not show up until nine days after being bitten. In some people the bites do not show up at all.  This makes it hard to determine if there is a bedbug presence in the home or not. Too many bites from a bed bug can eventually lead to one having an allergic reaction to it which may range from moderate to serious. As far as diseases go, research has shown that bedbugs are unable to pass along diseases from one person to another. Further research though has confirmed that bedbugs can transmit Chagas disease or hepatitis B in some rare cases.
