While 50 years ago there was a concerted effort to rid the US of the problem, today there are chronic complaints of bites and allergic reactions.

While it’s not technically considered a nocturnal  bugs, these parasites are known to feed on the host victim throughout the sleeping hours. Infestation of bed bugs usually happens when there is some sort of shared environment or you bring bed bugs home from an infested bed bugs environment. Apartment buildings are finding an increase in reports while hotels and motels are constantly battling the little bed bugs.

While a clean home can help deter many parasites, there is no truth to the concept that you can’t get infested  just because your house is clean. The misconception that a clean home can’t be infested leads to more problems.

Regardless of your daily cleaning habits, there is no reason why you can’t bring them home from a vacation or a business trip that placed you in an bed bugs infested hotel for the night. College students can bring them home as well if they are sleeping in a dormitory or apartment building.

I’ll just call the Exterminator and my bed bugs will be gone!  The EPA Clearly states that getting rid of bed bugs requires a lot of common sense practices and diligent work from the home owner.  The exterminator will not clean your mattress, vacuum your room and everything in it, spread diatomaceous earth along your base boards, seal your cracks and crevices and de clutter your room.  You have to do that!  They only spray or bring dogs to sniff and determine if you have bed bugs.

People think that bed bugs are extinct and it is a problem that other people have.  Our government has announced that bed bugs are now considered an epidemic due to world travel, pesticides that no longer work and the lack of our awareness.

People think if they stay in 5 star hotels that they will avoid bringing home bed bugs OR that these hotels do not have bed bugs in them.  We all know that hotels do not advertise that they have bed bugs because this would cripple their business, however know that every hotel whether its a dump or a 5 star hotel it is still at risk in contacting bed bugs due to the high travel rate.

Determining whether bed bugs has bitten you isn’t so easy. They leave behind the same type of welt that your typical mosquito would leave on your skin. Usually you start off thinking that you have been bitten by the mosquito even if you can’t remember being vulnerable to such bites.

Most people figure out that they might have a parasite infestation when they wake up several mornings in a row and discover that they have been bitten again. Since the actual biting process is not felt, the morning itch tends to reveal new bites all over the body.

Solutions for Bed Bugs

Complaining to environmental health is the first solution for bed bugs but they will be expensive and sometimes they do not do such a good job. Then there is the matter of taking time of work to organize all this and clearing the mess they make.

Start by buying several rolls of black plastic bags for bed bugs, because you will need to triple bag everything.

You will need to wash every item of linen, clothing, towels etc. To prevent further  problems on bed bugs strip your bed and duvet and neatly fold them and triple bag them.

Get a big polythene bag and wrap the mattress in it before you move it to prevent bed bugs.

This is to prevent the bed bugs from falling all over the place and spreading. As you don’t want to end up cleaning the whole house to be free from bed bugs.

Make sure that you do that with towels and all your clothes including outer garments. Do your whole wardrobe if you have to to prevent bed bugs.

If you have a lot of clothes then buy plenty of disinfectant or clothes bleach from the pharmacist to be free from bed bugs.

There are usually many discount offers in local shops and that could save you a lot of money in the long run for bed bugs solutions.

Avoid using the home washer for bed bugs protection, it is smaller and will take a lot longer to do everything. The laundry ones are bigger and water circulates more rapidly and freely.

Keeping all the laundry in separate piles, add plenty of detergent and one full bottle of disinfectant and wash on boil wash to prevent bed bugs.

Dry you clothes twice in the dryer on very high heat. This will kill all bed bugs permanently.

Then fold the clothes neatly and put them in new plastic bags and seal them with some tape, so any remaining bed bugs suffocate. Avoid using the old bags in case of any lurking larvae.

On the way back buy several cans of bed bugs insect spray and ant slaying powder, it will do the trick of preventing any further development or nesting.

Safely spray the mattress from a distance. Make sure that all the edges are clean as that is where the bugs infest the most.

Then thoroughly clean the whole of the bedroom, especially the tops of light switches, windows, doors and skirting boards.

If you have a carpet, steam cleanse and just put some ant powder along edges of the carpet, because bedbugs thrive in those areas.

Spread a thin layer of ant powder all over the carpet and open all the windows, vacuum before going to bed.
